The Quakes - Negitive Charge (2009)
Howdy people, startin' out "Sande's Poor Man's Throwbacks — Good Bands You Forgot You Own" segment with The Quakes. The Quakes are a punk/rockabilliy band that started out in the 80's and Negative Charge is their latest album which came out last year. If you're a Tiger Army, Pennywise, or Offspring fan I'm thinking you would dig these guys. They got that indefinable, throw-caution-to-the-wind, punkish swagger. The Quakes are more popular in Europe, so you might get a little taste of British punk in there mixed in with the heavy drums and stand up bass. Whenever I hear them wailing, it always makes me want to get back in the tattoo parlor REALLY bad, especially "Seven Seas Alone." Something about really good bands that never made it big for no apparent reason other than bad luck, have always had a special place in my heart. I repeatedly blast The Quakes whenever I overcome some small obstacle just to even the score. So, if you ever want to cut loose just cause you deserve it, I suggest cranking up "Ghost Town," "Negative Charge," or "Straight to Valhalla," drink too many whiskey sours and get some more reckless ink, because why the fuck not?

You must be the biggest Wrens fan ever, then :) They have my favorite "wtf, bad luck" story ever!
WTF, Quickcrit messed up my quotation... the <<>> was referring to your "bands that never, for some reason, made it big due to bad luck" part.
Tell you the truth I have never heard of them before, but from the bit I listened to they sound pretty sweet!

It's pretty funny, particularly the part about Creed :) Yes, they rock! Secaucus is a great record, but The Meadowlands may turn you into a die-hard fan for sure.
Ps - did you ever get back into the tattoo parlor post-hearing the album? I'm a sucker for forearm tattoos. Every dude should get one!
Yeah the Meadowlands is good. Not yet on the ink, my sister and I go every New Year's so I'm trying to wait till then. I like forearm tattoos as well, but I have to wait to get one due to work professionalism, lame!
Given your joint love of blues and punk, I think you should check out The Bloody Hollies. They are never going to make it big, but they are fucking awesome and now that they are out of San Diego they may tour up the West Coast sometime. I love their last two albums.
I like em'. They sound pretty brash, like you would end up really sweaty after the show.
