Surprise! Free show! Hockey made a relatively unannounced visit to Mississippi Studios. It's been a couple of months since I saw them last. Meanwhile they have been touring Europe and recording their first official release. Having practically memorized their self-released mini album, it was fun to listen for any new developments. The biggest change was on "Preacher", which was noisier and featured a rather harsh and repeating keyboard chord, but still had everyone dancing. They played a couple of new songs, including "Learn To Lose" and a folk song I hadn't heard before but might not be new. Over all, even though lead singer, Ben Grubin, was slightly less animated due to illness, they sounded road tested and tight. It was nice catching up.
Here's a video for their new single.

Actually, the last time I saw them was in December, not October.
Apologies to Dolorean, who we planned on seeing at Laurelthirst. Next week I swear.
I love how you've mentioned the awesomeness that is apparently Hockey a zillion times on QuickCrit... and I still have yet to hear a single song of theirs, haha.
This was the second time that I've seen Hockey and have to say that I'm totally a fan. Also, this is the second time that I've seen the lead singer (and possibly the keyboardist) wearing a ladies shirt.
There. I've added the video for their new single to the post. No excuses now.
I like the glitter in the video. Nice touch.
Hahhaa, whoa, I just refreshed my page and saw the YouTube thing and thought "Am I retarded and missed that before commenting about never hearing a song?"
You sneaky devils.
Brasilliant. Lady's shirt? I'm intrigued... elaborate please? V-neck? Ick.
Actually, he pulls off the ladies shirts well. They weren't v-neck, but you could totally tell by the neckline and cut.
Awwww, cute sounds. Of course you love them awmercy. He's got some soulful vocals for a white boy!
He sounds very Kooks-ish?
Okay, I'm fearful of any man who can pull off ladies shirts better than me. Is it just me, or is he also wearing a headband in the video? I'm totally j, I have never been able to pull of headbands.
Headband? Check.
Awesomeness? Check.
If you can't handle the headband...
Another Hockey lovefest coming out of the UK and I couldn't agree more.
Who knows, they might get to be on my best of 2008 AND best of 2009 lists!
